Robert Glasper. Sounds unfamiliar to you? Well maybe but I bet you’ve heard one of the songs he has worked on with artists such as Bilal, Most Def, Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Commong, Maxwell, the late great J-Dilla and more. It’s funny because as much as I love music, I realized that musicians like him get less and less credit when they create the musical landscape. Robert made a good point about jazz. He mentioned how it used to be the young people’s music what they danced to and rebelled to. It was always moving, free flowing and evolving. So when he made his last album, Black Radio with a number of hiphop and R&B features, he said it wasn’t jazz fusion but just JAZZ. Because it’s just jazz. The funny thing about it is that when I was young, I used to go to the local library and rent Miles Davis tapes or cds. (Sorry, I was in the era where I saw the change between the two mediums.)
Anyway, the album is amazing and I haven’t even gotten through the whole thing yet. Please check out a few samples here and then purchase a copy to support this young brotha.
