I really hate learning about artists this good from the Grammys. Discovering artists that no one or little have heard of is finding a treasure. You really hate to share until the last moment. Sounds selfish but that’s just how you feel. Esperanza is an amazing all around artist from singer/songwriter to bassist. She sings everything from jazz to soul. Plus how can you resist the amazing FRO she sports. I love it.

Esperanza Spalding & Gretchen Parlato – “Useless Landscape (Inutil Paisagem)”

I found this song and fell in love with it. The original composer is Jobim, a Brazilian legend who was instrumental during the creation of bossanova.

Esperanza Spalding – Black Gold

This song speaks to me. Listen to the conversation between the two kings, you and old, about Africa and what is has and in some cases still offers.

I’m exactly the same when it comes to new music. A little bit of the shine fades when everyone knows! Yeah she’s bad. I’ve got her self titled LP. I think it was her debut or possibly second. In that she’s rocking a Latin jazz thing. A little too much skatting on that one in my opinion, but she’s sounding very soulful on this release. Can’t understand how she can play such intricate bass lines and sing lead melodies over…incredible!

Yeah. It sounds selfish but you are right. I heard her other cd was even better than the one she got nominated for. Going to check that out. Yeah the basslines are intricate especially with the singing. Just an incredible talent.
